When we think or talk about competency based education, the first word that comes to my mind is Skill. Skills develop in a human being after a deeper learning of content. This happens with understanding of concepts. Concepts can be learnt when we are able to link new concepts with old concepts and transfer the new knowledge in a real life situation / in an unfamiliar situation.
It is thought that CBE emphasises on skills more than content. It is true that Competency Based Education is more focused on skills. These skills should be transferable to contexts. However it must be kept in mind that mastery over content is very much necessary for developing the skills. Further, through authentic application of skills, learners develop better understanding and mastery of content.
CBE&E : competency based education and evaluation, its a shift from "assessment of learning " towards "assessment for learning" the evaluation is not about how much the child has learnt . but its more likely how competent the child has become and apply the conceptual knowledge in coming years or real life situations. its formative in nature like- learning-assessment-diagnosis of problems in learning-remedial actions -elimination of obstacles-practice-mastery. we can also use different terminology for encouraging slow bloomers and average students D-developing instead of below average C-competent instead of average students E-examplary instead of high achievers. this will inculcate a kind of responsibility in students and they can accomplish more out of everything.
