 Competency Based Education

Competency Based Education implies an education system that promotes competency. It means this system of education produces a competent person. When we talk about a competent person, we mean a person equipped with skills. Skills are closely associated with all the three domains of learning i.e. Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor. However, if we see logically, a set of skills must be demonstrated by an educated person. These skills may be under the purview of any of the mentioned domains. When display of a skill comes in the picture with reference to education, we talk about learning outcomes. 

So for a goal of learning - teaching system, there should be a set of competencies to be attained. For each competency there may be a number of learning outcomes. 

When we see competency based education in detail, we come to know about the following aspects:-
1. Acquiring of knowledge with better conceptual clarity.
2. Knowledge construction with deeper learning.
3. Linking of knowledge with immediate environment / real life situations.
4. Use of contextual learning - teaching material.
5. Ability to apply learning in unfamiliar situations.

The above aspects entail on responsibility of teachers to work for 
                    (a) Conceptual Clarity
                    (b) Deep Learning
                    (c) Active Learner
                    (d) Teaching Learning processes linked to real life situations
                    (e) Going beyond the text book

Working Principles for the Teachers under Competency Based Education
1. Try to adopt activity based teaching learning process.
2. Adopt a teaching method in which there is maximum scope of activity of students 
3. Maximum number of students should be involved in the teaching learning interaction through different techniques.
4. Take students outside the four walls of classroom to have a meaningful activity done. 
5. Use low cost / no cost learning aid material.
6. Take care of cultural and linguistic background of learners while adopting a teaching strategy. 
7. Adopt the flip classroom technique for timely and effective completion of syllabus.
8. Use story telling pedagogy, multidisciplinary approach, flash cards etc.
